Not too long ago, Apple announced iBooks 2, iBooks Author, and a new application, iTunes U. I think Apple definitely will be revolutionizing the textbook industry with these programs.
Education is deep in Apple’s DNA and iPad may be our most exciting education product yet. With 1.5 million iPads already in use in education institutions, including over 1,000 one-to-one deployments, iPad is rapidly being adopted by schools across the US and around the worldNow with iBooks 2 for iPad, students have a more dynamic, engaging and truly interactive way to read and learn, using the device they already love. – Apple’s Worldwide Marketing Head, Phil Schiller at the Apple Education Event.
During the event, Vice president of Productivity Software and iWork Roger Rosner took the stage to reveal iBooks 2. Roger showed of the a biology textbook “Life on Earth” demoing all the features that iBooks 2 will feature. There were 3D models, better indexing with page number search, multitouch gestures, and the difference between the landscape and portrait modes.
I think one of the best features (as a student) for me is the interactive Q&A content for students and teachers. Roger demonstrated how a one can highlight texts on any page and the iBooks 2 will instantly transform them into study notes.
With the release of iBooks 2, Phil Schiller announced a new textbook category on the iBookStore. iBooks 2.0 is available as a free update to those 1.0 owners and a free download for those new iBooks users. iBooks is available for all iDevices but the textbooks feature is only available on the iPad.
Textbooks are priced at $14.99 or less and a full lists of book publishing companies Apple partnered up can be found here.
